Photo of the sample rain barrel at the 2009 Summit green lifestyles eveningHow To Make A Rain Barrel

The sample rain barrel in this photo is not 55 gallons. It's smaller so it can be brought to show people and not fill my trunk!

  1. Get a 55 gallon barrel. They are sometimes available from soda bottling factories inexpensively. Wooden ones can sometimes be purchased from wineries.
  2. Use a 3/4 inch drill bit to drill a hole near the top and the bottom.
  3. Cut a 4 inch hole in the top with a jig saw. Glue a screen on a 4 inch atrium grate. Place the grate in the hole.
  4. Take two 1 inch adapters / valves and wrap their threads with teflon tape (used by plumbers). Screw them into the holes you drilled.
  5. Place under your down spout. Use a flex elbow to direct water into the atrium grate. A downspout adapter is optional.
  6. Attach a hose to the bottom adapter to direct water where you need it.
